How to Get Results in the Gym

Eat more protein! Don’t waste time with cardio, HIIT’s the way! Sleep more, stress less! These days, we’re pretty much bombarded with information on how to get shredded faster and reveal that sexy, toned body in time for summer. But, do you really want to know how to get results in the gym?

As a personal trainer with more than 10 years of experience, I’ve worked with a fair few clients. And, although everyone’s different, there’s one common thread that connects the people who DO get results, regardless of what they are or how long it takes.

They have confidence in their program and their trainer and use that as motivation to push harder and show up every single day.

It’s that simple!

While you might want to believe that if you just drink that special protein shake or try this program instead of that, there’s no substitute for hard work. Listen your trainer, put in the effort every day, stick with it and trust me, the results will come.

Having Confidence in Your Program

Ever wondered why some ‘celebrity’ or well-marketed programs seem to get such great results?

People believe they’ll work. And, if you think it’s going to work, you’ll train harder. Train harder and you’ll get the results you’ve been looking for all along.

Then, once you start seeing results, it’ll improve your confidence even more, boosting your motivation again and keeping you on the path to success.

The Importance of Recovery

Even if you’ve got all the confidence in your program but you’re ignoring recovery (i.e. rest AND nutrition), you more than likely won’t get the results you’re looking for.

Regardless of what goal you’re trying to reach, giving your body enough time to rest and repair between sessions is essential to drive results.

The same goes for nutrition as well. Your body needs the right amount of food and nutrients to perform and recover so you get to where you want to be. That means making sure that you’re eating enough food as well, especially if you’re trying to lose weight.

Know That Progress Isn’t Linear

Don’t ever expect that once you start getting results, they’ll just keep on coming! Gaining strength, improving your fitness and losing fat happens in spurts. So, if your progress has slowed, don’t lose confidence in your program.

Just keep on working hard and the results will come!

How to Choose a Great Program

Although having confidence that your program is going to work is the most important factor in driving you to work harder and get results, it does matter what you’re doing in the gym. So, how do you choose a program that you know will give you results?

First and foremost, look for a trainer with plenty of experience and the qualifications to boot. These days, it’s all too easy to get qualified as a fitness professional without truly knowing how to get the best results for people. Feel free to ask your potential PT about their background, whether they’ve worked with people like you and any other questions you want to learn about their area of expertise.
